Mid-infrared optical fibers are specialized optical fibers designed to transmit light in the mid-infrared (MIR) region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The mid-infrared region typically ranges from approximately 2 to 20 micrometers (μm) in wavelength, corresponding to frequencies lower than those of visible light but higher than those of terahertz radiation. Mid-infrared optical fibers can be used as bare fiber or as fiber patch cords, i.e. with additional protection and fiber optic connectors at the ends. In various respects, mid-infrared optical materials are substantially less suitable for fiber fabrication than silica. Mid-infrared optical fibers are typically much more expensive, mechanically less robust and exhibit substantially higher propagation losses. These fibers are engineered to efficiently transmit light within this wavelength range, enabling various applications such as spectroscopy, chemical sensing, medical diagnostics, and telecommunications. Designing optical fibers for the mid-infrared range presents unique challenges compared to fibers designed for visible or near-infrared light. Common materials used for mid-infrared fibers include chalcogenide glasses, fluoride glasses, and other specialty materials that exhibit low optical losses within the MIR range.
